Understanding this connection is important because it provides a basis upon which one builds upon another, thereby integrating the various elements into a cohesive whole. While the Old Testament and New Testament are separate parts of the Bible, they are unified in terms of being the collective basis of Christianity. Therefore, it is this collective aspect that becomes the integral point to consider in regards to the impact of the Old Testament for New Testament writers. There are some important considerations in regards to the use of the Old Testament by New Testament writers (Clark, 2004). First, it is important to understand the general direction that these two different categories of writers were propelling toward (Clark, 2004). More specifically, in the case of Old Testament writers, they were mainly driving toward the coming of Jesus Christ (Clark, 2004). In other words, their works and the goals of the writing point in this direction (Clark, 2004). On the other hand, in regards to the New Testament writers, the general purpose of their writings is far more historical, basically assuming that Jesus marks the beginning of history and they therefore are telling their stories from that point forth. While the Old Testament looks forward to Jesus, the New Testament generally reviews the time of Jesus and beyond (Clark, 2004). Given this assumption, there are certain principles that can be applied to the different writings (Clark, 2004).
