ideal to perhaps get someone to stop engaging in harmful behavior, it makes sense to at least reduce harm if abstinence is unlikely. For example, a teenager using drugs may
be educated on dangerous drugs so will avoid heroin and cocaine, but may still smoke marijuana. Many abstinence based programs not only would punish a client for smoking pot, but
would further enforce the rules that the client not even smoke cigarettes. Obviously, with clear restraints on behavior, many who are addicted to tobacco, will likely go back to smoking,
which may lead to heavier drug use. The harm reduction model, by contrast, allows the drug user to continue to use some
drugs, but to do so safely. Another example might be that an alcoholic who refuses to stop drinking at least not drive when he goes out. This remedy assures that
there will not be an accident caused by drinking and driving. It perhaps allows the addiction to continue, but the client is safer than before the treatment started. Obviously, the
harm reduction is controversial in a world where the most acceptable paradigm is abstinence. In fact, many drug crimes receive sentences where AA or NA cards are accepted as a
part of a sentence. That is, the courts often mandate that abusers go to abstinence based programs and that they show proof that they have attended. That said, it is
