One example of this is seen with the Wal-Mart system, and the way inventory and ordering takes place. The processes not only automated storage data but play an active role is aiding with strategy decision making to support the main process; the sale of goods to consumers. The system is one that integrated the supply chain and although it is a Wal-Mart system there is access provided to vendors to track the sales of their goods. The company uses an Oracle database with a networked infrastructure supplied by Cisco (Cisco, 2006). The Oracle database, which is fully scalable and can cope with the large size operations dealt with by Wal-Mart and literally hundreds of suppliers and thousands of products is a relational database which can be queried in a number of ways in order to provide information for different purposes. The system is into links with Wal-Mart own database developed in the 1990s; Retail Linka. The aim of the system is to increase co-operation between the firm and suppliers in order to create value within the supply chain. The use of the system started out as a dialing in network which facilitated the connections between the retail and the vendors in order to place orders with the vendors. since then with the involvement of Cisco and the setting up of broadband access to the Internet Retail Linka has become an Internet publication with an underlying Oracle database (Oracle, 2004).
