Systems theory also embraces the notion that the concept may be applied to a variety of things such as those within the boundaries of social, biological and mechanical labels (McLeish, 1993). In other words, there are many types of systems. In applying systems theory to family, one can clearly see that a family functions within this model. In a hypothetical example, a family consists of four people. There is the mother, father and two children. The children are ages 13 and 18 and are a girl and boy respectively. Their names are Katie and Kyle. The father goes out to work to keep the family intact through financial support. The mother cleans the home and takes care of the needs of the children. The children go to school and fill a role in society as students and future workers. Pattern maintenance and goal attention are two things that are part of a system and for this family, maintaining the status quo means that the family progresses financially and socially. If for example the 18 year old is arrested for drunk driving, that throws off the stability or equilibrium of the family system. The 13 year old may be experimenting with drugs and this too will affect the family. In this case study, Katie begins to act out in school. She is suspended for fighting and not obeying the commands of the teachers at times. Each of these infractions are not very serious but they collectively put her at risk for school failure.
