underscore the complex idea of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. One of the more recognizable symbols of the HIV/AIDS awareness public health campaign is the red ribbon, used to
identify those in support of people with HIV/AIDS or those who have the virus. The following is an example of the red ribbon image that is frequently displayed on
HIV/AIDS awareness pamphlets and in advertising copy for awareness/support and prevention campaigns: Another type of visual communication commonly utilized in advertising campaigns for HIV/AIDS awareness is the
use of images, specifically photographs. Photographs in conjunction with messages of the potential to spread HIV and the risk of contracting HIV are common components of the prevention campaigns.
For example, the following photograph of HIV/AIDS activists includes images of people like Elizabeth Taylor, Will Smith and Nelson Mandela, with the caption: "We all have AIDS if
one of us does." Though most of the people identified do not have AIDs, the statement is one of a unified front against HIV/AIDS discrimination and stigmatization. The
forceful idea behind this image is that AIDS should be a collective problem, one that sparks a community-based response. This
unified message is often reflective of the metaphor that we must wage war against the AIDS epidemic (Kothari & Hall, 2010).
