Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), provided by the American Psychiatric Association, and the treatment process has also been outlined extensively in the current literature, including both pharmacological
and behavioral responses to the issue. ADHD is a prevalent and increasing problem in adolescent populations, and as a result familial links and the efficacy of treatment processes have
become a significant focus over the past decade. Psychology and ADHD The assessment of ADHD has resulted in the application of a variety of psychological "schools of
thought" including both behaviorism and humanism. The application of behaviorism has resulted from the perspectives on some of the central issues and symptomologies related to ADHD. Adolescents who
are diagnosed with ADHD commonly reject tasks that require sustained mental efforts and suggest that these are both unpleasant and are markedly aversive. These same individuals often display avoidance,
but it is often difficult to evaluate if this avoidance is due to the individuals difficulties in attention or if they are due to the primary oppositional attitude that is
often prevalent in adolescent populations (APA, 1994). It must be noted that secondary oppositionalism is common and an accepted element of the progression of ADHD, but clinicians must be
careful to evaluate the differentiation between primary and secondary opposition (is the opposition secondary to the difficulties in attention) (APA, 1994). Individuals with this disorder are frequently distracted
