The development of trauma registry databases has occurred in conjunction with the need to provide expansive data to support trauma response, improve critical care functions and maintain the need
for expanded trauma and emergent/critical care services. Trauma registry databases have expanded in recent years in conjunction with expanding information systems technology and improvements in the function of computer-based data
collection processes. Trauma registry databases can now provide a variety of types of information, from variations and percentages of trauma types treated, to the coding of trauma for internal
(hospital) and external (insurers, government agencies, etc.) uses. Statement of the Problem The use of trauma registry databases for secondary data analysis has become a
part of the modern health care arena. Many different health care facilities with trauma centers have implemented the use of computer-based trauma registries to provide comparable data. The
trauma registry, then, has been viewed as a critical component to the successful development of any hospital or critical care trauma system (Trauma Registry, 2004). In Nova Scotia,
