costing thousands of jobs, others see technology as being a tool, that is used correctly can increase productivity and control over the manufacturing and distribution process. By looking at two
articles we can consider how technology may be used to resolve some problems. Scott Foster writes an article on the use of RFID by Canadian company Conros Fuels based in
Toronto which manufactures synthetic logs and fire products that are sold in Canada and the US (Foster, 2004). This is an interesting article as it makes use of a form
of technology that is still in the growth stage as it has not been taken up by many manufactures, but appears to be in that is likely to increase in
use (Foster, 2004). It I also a fairly simple idea but one that allows the tracking of goods even when thy have left the factory. The problem that Cronos
has been facing was the way in which the demand for goods was not uniform and how a failure of a company to have the goods in stock could reflect
on the company with customers that were unhappy. The use of RFID was seen as a way of helping the company to overcome this.
RFID is short for Radio Frequency Identification which is a new technology that makes use of radio technology (Foster, 2004). The system is one that will let data
be transmitted though the presence of a tag. This can be programmed to give specific information regarding a product. This may be product type, size and can be used to
