a system is something that is found everywhere. Nature includes systems and cycles and that is apparent when watching a garden grow in May after planting seeds in February. Winter
always turns to spring, and people sleep at night and wake in the morning. The flowers grow and die on cue. In business, systems theory is a little different as
personalities and dictates determine outcome. That said, systems theory can be used to analyze situations in the office. First, what is a system? Zemke (2001) defines it as follows: "A
"system" as Forester uses the word, refers to a collection of parts working interdependently to create a specifiable outcome." In the larger sense, it means that there are different parts
such as family members, members of a corporation, parts of a machine, ideas in a discipline and so forth, and that these parts work together in a unique fashion. Although
it is true that a system such a computer system or machine will work precisely as programmed, it is not necessarily the case that human beings cannot behave in a
system-like manner. In other words, although it is true that many people do seem to do as the like-or at least think they do-they really react to their environment. A
family system for example will involve a mother, father, sister and brother. If the father is an alcoholic, his behavior will affect the children. He may beat his wife. Her
behavior changes. No family member can exist without significantly altering anothers behavior. It is as if they have no choice. Gharajedaghi (1999) writes: " The parts of a mindless mechanical
