Symbolism assists each of the literary figures in conveying their message, which in both cases is an assessment of the state of society. By using symbolism, these authors are
able to subtly introduce their messages without having to overtly state them, thereby heightening the intrigue and drama within the story.
The Birthmark, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, uses a significant amount of symbolism to convey its message. The very title is symbolic because what most people regard as
a sign of beauty, Aylmer regards basically as a hideous imperfection that must be eradicated. This is indicative of Aylmers nature though - he misses the beauty of life
because he finds imperfection in all that he sees. Therefore, Hawthorne uses the birthmark as a symbol of imperfection, and as
a symbol of his inability to ever be satisfied. The harder he tries to make Georgiana beautiful and perfect in order that he may love her, the further away
she actually gets, until of course, he kills her. The birthmark then comes to symbolize all the beauty that Aylmer cannot have, because he is too blind to see
it right in front of him. However, in The Birthmark we are also introduced to the character of Aminidad, who
is Aylmers assistant and symbolizes the "right" thing to do. He knows that Georgiana will be killed by the potion which is mean to remove her birthmark, yet he
