wreak havoc for builders. In fact, years later structures can crumble so proper planning and application is critical to success. First, it should be noted that there are many types
of concrete, each of which have different properties in order to properly reinforce steel , beams, columns, and footings. For example, corrosion protection is an issue when building a parking
garage or similar structure. A cost-effective method of providing corrosion protection is with the use of low permeability, silica fume concrete ("Admixture," 1990). Silica fume concrete is a
portland cement concrete where silica fume has been included ("Admixture," 1990). Because silica fume is very fine, it requisites a high degree of water (1990). All of the
advantages found in silica fume may be counteracted by the adding of water, or a high-range, water-reducing admixture like a superplasticizing admixture, incorporated in order to provide workability while
maintaining a desirable water ratio (1990). In addition to the admixture-treated concrete, such a structure should also incorporate epoxy-coated rebar for additional corrosion protection (1990). Other materials and methods
are also viable. For example, glass-fiber-reinforced polymer rebar is another alternative and suitable in many situations. In fact, glass-fiber-reinforced polymer rebar has carved a niche in the civil engineering
marketplace in a period of fewer than 25 years, but more research and new codes are necessary in order to ensure its longevity (Childs, 1999). In discussing types of
concrete, one may wonder why it is so critical to choose the right stock. The answer is easy and comes down to time and money. The cost of
repairing damaged concrete structures in the U.S. has been estimated at more than one trillion dollars, according to a 1990 article and much of that cost stems from corroding
