Motivational techniques and improvements in assistive technology have provided children with disabilities with avenues for improving their function, allowing many to reach goals that few thought they could ever achieve. Individual to be Served "Beth" is a 16 year old girl who was born with a chromosomal defect that caused congenital microcephally. As a result of the small size of her skull and the subsequent restrictions over her development, Beth is non-verbal, though she has shown the capacity for using both sign language and an assistive communication devise. Though Beth is ambulatory, she lacks some fine motor skills, and so the use of assistive technology is limited to devices that are easy to touch, easy to manipulate and easy to carry. The diagnosis of Beths physiological condition is based on the assessment of her head size, that is more than three standard deviations below average, but this condition in itself does not distinguish microcephalic children as automatically requiring services. Some microcephalic children are much higher functioning than Beth, but the small size of her skull and the restrictions on brain development have resulted in Beths diagnosis of a significant developmental disability. Beth has some other significant limitations that sometimes hinder her ability to function and communicate with others. Beth has a large overbite, which has resulted from the shift in the structure of her skull that has resulted from her condition.
