metaphor, which serves to unite the different aspects of this piece. Therefore, an understanding of this sonnet begins first with an awareness of the metaphor that Shakespeare employs.
Shakespeare uses several metaphors in this sonnet, but the main metaphor is that of autumn, which is used to represent death.
Just like the leaves change in autumn and begin to die, so too does this poem embark upon the subject of aging and death. In this way, the tree
that experiences the cool, crisp air of autumn is very much representative of the tree of our lives. This tree experiences seasons just as we do. And, like
us, the tree ages. Therefore, when autumn arrives and the trees leaves change color, we realize that these leaves will soon
drop and become part of the earth. And yet, their brilliance before their demise cannot go unappreciated, because the spectacle is far too intense. Their glorious colors in
the bright autumn sunshine are cause for celebration, even as awareness of their impending fall is present. In this way, this
is symbolic of life. Man hopefully lives a long, full life full of many experiences that culminate to form the "autumn" of the individual. That is, prior to
the death of an individual, we all hope to achieve brilliance and glory in our lives. Our lives have meaning and substance when we can reflect back upon our
choices and experiences with satisfaction and gratitude. Just like the beautiful display of autumn leaves, we all hope to have a brilliant autumn in our lifetime.
