This has gone on for centuries and there is nothing wrong with beautifying the world. However, sometimes problems crop up concerning ethics and animals, particularly when they are involved in
such pursuits. To look ones best at the expense of an animals life may not be worthwhile. Thus, throughout the history of Spain the issue of ivory has always
cropped up. While the ethics issue is not specific to Spanish culture, the use of ivory is. It seems as if the Spanish have been enamored of ivory for centuries.
Ivory is versatile and can be use to beautify objects, such as chairs, sofas and coffee tables and it can also be use as a base to carve objects of
art. Many are familiar with the small animals carved with the use of this precious white material. The use of ivory, in Spain and elsewhere, has been significant through history
and it was not until the twentieth century when critical trade laws impacted trade of this hot commodity. One of the greatest law breakers in respect to ivory is in
fact Spain. While Spain is not renown for utilizing pure ivory, the people seem to love the objects which are carved from it. Spain lacks ivory and so the
people desire the objects which are made from the raw material. Ivory carving is not new. It dates back to about 4,000 years to the earliest civilizations in India, at
Harappa and Mohenjodaro (West, 1999). It has in fact been noted that the Old Testament suggests that ivory was imported by King Solomon (1999). India is in fact one of
