order to make this story more effective. This is a story of extreme realism, and Crane manages to juxtapose harsh realities against hopeful dreams in a variety of circumstances
to show the reader just how opposed the two actually are. In this way then, he masterfully uses irony to enforce his points and to underscore the major themes
of this story. Cranes Sense of Irony The story of the author himself is ironic, as he wrote this story at
the very young age of just 22 (Stephen Crane: American Author, 2002). This story was rejected by an abundance of publishers because of its realism and the depressing
message which it sends (Stephen Crane: American Author, 2002). "Realism is defined as an inclination toward literal truth and pragmatism" (Glazer, 2002). Publishers didnt like that negative
feel and therefore Crane had to publish the book at his own expense (Stephen Crane: American Author, 2002). This
is actually a very sad story, and one which the reader cannot help but feel a sense of loss for the children of such horrible parents. Because of two
parents who were drunks and irresponsible, their children have grown up to live lives that are fraught with insecurities, hardships and many other unresolved issues. Maggie is a prime
example of this. While at first she appears to be immune to the despair around her and she apparently seems
to maintain her sense of innocence, this all changes when Pete (her brothers friend) comes back into town and recognizes Maggie and her vulnerability. Maggie is taken with Pete
