of these authors have important statements to make about society, and through their use of irony revealed through a cast of complex characters, these statements are indeed internalized by readers
of these works. Therefore, these authors use irony to make their social analysis more poignant to readers, and to illustrate their intentions rather than overtly stating them.
The Birthmark, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is indeed a study in irony. The very title is ironic because what most people
regard as a sign of beauty, Aylmer regards basically as a hideous imperfection that must be eradicated. This is indicative of Aylmers nature though - he misses the beauty
of life because he finds imperfection in all that he sees. Hawthorne is able to brilliantly demonstrate the nature of Aylmer
through the use of irony. This occurs through his relationship with the world, his wife and also through his obsession with perfection. What is ultimately the biggest irony
that completely escapes Aylmer is that his life has everything necessary to be completely wonderful and happy - if only he could see it.
Therefore, Aylmer is destined to live a life of unhappiness, based not upon any inherently horrible thing about his life, but based entirely on his perception
of his life. Instead of enjoying his work, and his wife, and the good things that surround him, he focuses on all the imperfections, most of which dont exist
anywhere but in his own mind. Clearly Aylmer doesnt want to see the beauty in his own life, as well as in the bigger picture of humanity. Its
