in school. Because the colonists were subject to the whims of the invaders, it was thought that for some, going to a school run by the Europeans was the best
course of action. In his early days, Diallo had done well in school, and enjoyed learning, and then he would be sent to a learning institution run by the invaders.
He learns from the French and when he grows up, attends school in France. There is seemingly a rift between this character and the religion in which he was raised.
It may be that the schools run by the French were not conducive to learning, at least for Diallo, or it just might be the case that Diallo is simply
uninspired. Samba Diallo grows up rather bitter, feeling as if he lost something by not succumbing to the dictates of high culture. In other words, he tries to be a
part of European culture, but finds that he is lacking. He to some extent clings to the culture that he lost, while not really understanding how or why he cannot
feel the good feelings he did in his youth. In many ways, the blaming of the change in education ignores the fact that Diallo as a character would grow regardless
of where he went to school. This is ironic as one would think that expanding ones horizons would be good for the soul and would demonstrate how earlier convictions were
true after all. For Diallo, the experience seemingly did quite the opposite. In the context of this work, the narrator is used to express the use of irony. There
are in fact several ironic twists. The narrator provides a great deal of description and the voice is rather bland. This provides information for the reader with the added notion
