Ongoing education is critical in nursing, particularly in this time in which health care is changing so rapidly. After years of eschewing any form of research that could not be described as being fully quantitative, medical science is slowly, grudgingly embracing qualitative research as a valid method of investigating questions that do not easily lend themselves to empirical investigation based on a quantitative design. Putting research into practice can be as important as the fact that well-designed and valid research continues, particularly in the health care environment of today that continues to change so rapidly. The ongoing shortage of nurses puts them into a place in which they are even more valuable than in prior years. That and the changes that continue to take place so quickly combine to require ongoing education as never before. Need for Ongoing Education As mentioned above, the very fact that so many changes are taking place at such a rapid rate is reason enough that todays nurses need to ensure that they seek out and attain ongoing education. Technological advances do not only affect nurses jobs, it also contributes to the explosion of knowledge that has occurred in recent years. Research is not required to reach any monumental conclusions in order to be viewed either as valid or relevant. All it needs to do is add to the existing body of knowledge in order to be viewed as being valuable. That which can suggest other research that can in turn add more increases its inherent value.
