an organized way to gather intelligence. Rather, intelligence was hit or miss. Things happened, information came to the forefront, soldiers tried to crack codes, but things would not be out in the open nor would they be based on an efficient methods of intelligence gathering. Still, intelligence did affect the First World War a great deal. In some instances, intelligence would come much too late, but in other instances, it helped to break down codes and assisted one side to know what the other was doing. Obviously, this is quite important to strategic planning. Yet, much of the evidence found on this subject suggests that while intelligence as a science of sorts came into its own during that time frame, it was much too young to really make a difference. In other words, intelligence was an exciting innovation of the day, but it was in its infancy and did not affect the war significantly. In delving through history and looking at the events of World War I, much of the strategy was accomplished without intelligence. The little that was found was sometimes too little too late. It is important to remember that intelligence is valuable, but things were different at the time. This is very important to understand. It is not as if there were cell phones or video cameras around. It was not as if there had been rapid mass transportation. It was a time of the Titanic when the elite who could afford to sail across the ocean drowned due to miscommunication. Fast forward to today, and communication capacity is amazing. Google Earth can hone in on neighborhoods and specific homes and cars. Surveillance is certainly something acceptable in todays world.
