directed by John Schlesinger who keeps the spirit of Wests work alive. Schlesinger is able to create the imagery that West conveys in his book. Surrealism is implemented in
many scenes. While startling imagery is often used, one can say that there is more to it than that. The imagery is symbolic of elements that relate to the
meaning of the work. In order to analyze this aspect, one has to evaluate that techniques used in the context of the plot and characterization. Sutherlands character Homer Simpson
is well done and true to the original novel; Tod is perhaps toned down a bit in the film. Yet, characterization and the brilliant portrayal of Homer by Donald Sutherland
adds to the imagery. It is this image of Homer that is frightening, and larger than life, which seems to contribute to the message that is conveyed by the film
in its entirety. There are many scenes that tend to exemplify this use of imagery. For example, a surrealistic feel is used during the cock fight. Imagery as utilized
in this story is perhaps best exemplified in this disturbing scene. And while there are specific scenes that make use of particular images, it is the unusual looks by actors,
the decor of the homes in Hollywood, the color of the sky, the slight pouting of the lips by Faye, Tods angry stare, and so forth that culminates in an
