is heated. On one hand, the illegal immigrants are, as their title suggest, here illegally. On the other hand, there is a movement to see that they become citizens or
at least be given work visas so that their status will change. One issue that confronts the contemporary food service manager is whether or not he or she should make
use of this cheap labor supply. There are advantages and disadvantages to the practice, and then, there is the ethics of doing this. First, practical advantages are aligned with the
low wages that these individuals will be paid. That helps the bottom line. Another advantage is that there are no taxes to be paid and no paperwork to fill out.
Obviously, the ease of hiring day laborers or even those who linger longer, goes to legal entanglements. If an illegal immigrant becomes hurt, the employer can get into trouble. On
an episode of Greys Anatomy, an intern helped a young girl who worked in a sweatshop. She was terrified of going into the hospital for fear that her illegal status
and employers practices would be found out. Hiring illegal aliens comes with the fear of prosecution. It is an illegal act. This ethical issue also is attached to other practices
that do not even involved illegals. Some businesses hire workers-often high school kids-to work off the books. It is cheaper for the employer and usually, no one is the wiser.
