the medicinal benefits of currently unregulated herbal products as well as vitamins and foods that can do good. Still, controversy continues as many doctors do not endorse the use of
herbal supplements suggesting that they may conflict with traditional treatment methods. It is of course true that herbal medicines may be contraindicated in conjunction with certain drugs, but while that
is true to a degree, by and large, the use of both herbal products and prescription drugs is beneficial. When taken carefully in conjunction with prescription medications, herbal supplements can
enhance health and ultimately accelerate treatment benefits for certain ailments. For example, some people put aloe vera on their skin when it is cut as opposed to running to the
medicine cabinet for a first aid spray. Aloe vera is natural and many people happen to have the plants around the house for such emergencies. Some believe that aloe vera
has special qualities that can accelerate healing. However, a small cut is not a major catastrophe nor is it a serious problem. Further, aloe vera is relatively harmless. Other herbs
are not as benign. For example, poisonous herbs such as hemlock, jimsonweed and rue can prove fatal if too much is ingested (Visalli, 1996). Many wonder about the safety of
all of the herbal products found on the shelves of pharmacies today. Critics of supplements maintain that prescription medicines are tried and true. They have been tested, so why
try something that is not known to be completely safe. For someone who has not suffered through an illness, and have not seen the limits of traditional medicine, taking herbal
medicines may appear to be risky. But people who have lived through cancer and other deadly diseases know all too well that there is nothing perfect about modern medicine. In
