but that did not matter. It was not a concept well received. In many fields, the idea of genetic engineering is suspect as people feel that nature has made things as they ought to be and changing Gods world is akin to committing a crime of sorts. Of course, genetic engineering has been using safely, since the 1970s and attempts to create traits through selective breeding has also occurred for a much longer period of time (Gert, 1999). Genetic engineering entails the direct alteration of the genetic structure of an organism in order to provide it with traits that are deemed necessary by those doing the altering (Gert, 1999). Genetic markers are important to plant breeding and in fact biotechnology may hold the key to future strides in yields ("Feast," 1996). The use of both genetic maps and markers does provide a way for scientists to breed existing plant species in a more efficient manner (1996). While yields are important, and genetic markers may improve this aspect, quality is also a concern and there is a great deal of controversy concerning the use of bioengineering. While many object to the practice, there is a good reason to do it. In other words, there are two sides to the story. The old fashioned way of plant breeding entailed crossing parent plants that had desirable characteristics, like resistance to drought or pests ("Feast," 1996). Much like dog breeding where parents are selected to pass down the good traits, and some offspring are not considered to be of breeding quality, applying genetics to plants works much the same way. At least, the old fashioned method of plant breeding did. The problem with using that method is that not all genetic characteristics of a plant are readily apparent (1996). Some ...
