his backpack. The old stitching around the edge of the bag, which hed had since middle school, creaked and stretched but he knew it would hold. From downstairs he could
hear the voices of his brothers and sisters, all nine of them. Soon hed have relief from those voices. Maybe hed be able to hear what silence sounded like again;
how many years had it been? He took a last look around his room. Hed always imagined that his room would be left barren when he finally moved away, but
now that the time had come, he was surprised at how much hed left behind. So much stuff he just wasnt interested in anymore. Old baseball pennants hung with yellowed
pieces of desiccated tape. A pile of books his mother always called his favorites, but which he had really stopped reading years ago. There was nothing here he wanted anymore.
Except that one thing. He walked around the far side of his bed and opened a door set flush into the wall there. The "door" was in reality merely a
hinged section of sheet rock meant to draw as little attention as possible. It had been successful. The door had always been in Raleighs room, presumably, but he had never
noticed it, hidden as it was behind a chest of drawers, until he was ten. He pulled open the door and went inside, stooping down to avoid hitting his head.
Beyond the door was a small room, little more than a crawlspace. There was no light but he knew the place well enough anyway. When he found the place, the
