twin towers imploded on September 11, 2001 (Peck, 2001). The survivors are thought to still be at risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (2001). Dr. Harper explains that no
one in America has experienced dealing with a disaster of this size and so predicting the effects on mental health is rather difficult (2001). The news media has created a
barrage of reports that suggests the attacks have created a significant amount of depression among the populous. Dr. Harper further notes that PTSD has three primary elements which are an
initial exposure to an extraordinary event, the tendency to be easily startled and a phobic avoidance of things that remind the individual of trauma (2001). Symptoms of PTSD generally
appear within weeks succeeding an event, but it is possible for months to pass before symptoms manifest (Peck, 2001). Survivors who actually felt the building shake, for example, are
at the most risk for the disorder (2001). At the same time, one psychologist claims that in some ways, the entire island is at risk (2001). And one does see
the aftershocks. People report being afraid. Terrorists were successful. Not only did they kill a good number of people, but they also managed to terrify a city that was once
