the student in a cumulative process. In early childhood education, portfolios can be utilized because they allow for the integration of a variety of representative types of student work
product that can be assessed and compared. One of the problems in creating portfolio-based assessments in an educational setting is that there is some resistance in the implementation of
portfolio methods which can reduce the abilities of individuals to apply the change protocol (Pederson, 1997). Creating a systematic approach through which portfolio assessments can be integrated in early
childhood education requires a rationale for this change and methods for addressing educator resistance. Educators can view best work portfolios to assess student performance, determine participation in all
elements of curriculum and also in creating a view of the students capacity for change within the scope of the instructional content. Portfolios of student work can enhance an
understanding of the educational process and can be used to inform the approaches that educators take to introducing new materials and developing content (Morrison, 2004). Objectives The goal
of a change initiative is to enhance the ability of educators to use portfolios for assessments of students in early childhood education. The objectives include the following: 1.
To ensure that each educator has an understanding of the value of the change initiative (use of portfolios) based on evidence in the current literature (See Lam, 2008). 2.
To relate the specific methods through which portfolios can be used, including the types of portfolios and their application. 3. To provide specific guidance for the application of the change
initiative in the educational setting. These goals are based on the belief that the use of portfolio assessments can enhance the educational process, linked to research provided by Lam (2008).
