of being able to create a town from scratch; they all came from different countries and had a variety of ideas of what their new communities should look like (Miller
& Faux, 1997). And while it may have been inevitable, New York City took off like nothing had ever before. New York City grew faster than any other city
in the world due to immigration (Ellis, 1997). There had however been a change in the makeup of immigrants as prior to 1883, about 85% (1997, p.416) of
the immigrants were from northern or western Europe but after that time, foreigners began to arrive from central and southern Europe. Most of the newer arrivals, to come through
during the 1880s were fleeing religious persecution (1997). Due primarily to religious persecution in Russia, between 1881 and 1910 a total of 1,562,000 (Ellis, 1997, p.417) Jews migrated to
America and many new arrivals remained in New Yorks lower east side in an area formerly occupied by the Irish and German people; they quickly left to settle in other
parts of the city (1997). Upon arrival, the Jews formed groups and associations (Sarna, 1998). Today, the city has a great many more ethnic groups and while the Jews,
Irish and Germans were some of the first to come during the primary wave of immigration, today the city is truly a melting pot. In total, between 1855 and 1892,
