and her husband, it is evident from their actions and feelings that there is in a fact a third character who is of vital importance to both of them: the
unseen, shadowy figure who has written the letters. We are told a great deal about both the woman and her husband, in terms of their personality and behaviour, but the
letter-writer is never described in any detail: even so, it is he who has such a great influence on the ultimate fate of both of them.
In many ways, he can be seen as the most important character in the story, even
though he remains completely in the background and never actually appears in the text itself. We are told, for example, that the woman is cold and passionless, because this is
the impression that she has always given to her husband, and as a result his first reaction to the letters is that they must contain details of someone elses secrets:
he finds it unthinkable that there could be anything in his wifes past that he would not have known about.
However, it is clear from the opening section of the narrative that the unknown writer of the letters has seen a very different
woman from the one who is viewed by others as a passionless but loyal wife. Her behaviour, as she first casts the letters in the fire, then seizes them back
and tears them with her teeth, is not that of a woman devoid of love and passion: quite the reverse. We can deduce from this and other references to the
