It is not a perfect document by any means. Yet, it seems to be one of the best political documents ever devised. It has been called a living document, which
is of course another controversy. In recent times, an amendment was proposed to limit marriage to an institution in which only a man and a woman can enter. This
is and idea thought to be aligned with a political agenda against homosexuality, but there had been much opposition to it anyway. The idea that someone would want to alter
the much respected Constitution sent shivers down the spies of the faithful. Indeed, the Constitution to some extent is treated as something sacred, but of course, it is something that
has guaranteed the freedom for the people for more than two centuries. It is not a surprise that many want to protect its integrity. No other nation can boast the
same power for their documents and it has been a model to look up to. Therefore, few people want to tweak it. It seems perfect in its design. Of course,
nothing is perfect, and one criticism of it is that it is old. It is no longer applicable in todays postmodern world. To
what extent is a constitution a living document that adapts to changing circumstances? This question, posed by a student, falls under the theme of the living constitution. The
idea juxtaposes the notion that the Constitution is something that did lay down the law and should not be toyed with. For example, the Founders meant something by it years
