sides braced themselves for a long and costly strike. After twelve days of the strike, then-president of the Teamsters, Ron Carey, said a settlement was no closer than when talks. UPS estimated at that time, 12 days into the strike, that company losses had totaled close to half a billion dollars (Hopkins PG). During the strike, the company relied on management personnel to operate at greatly reduced levels. A skeleton crew of managers and workers piloted the delivery trucks, filling only about 10% of the companys normal delivery capacity. On the picket line, striking workers found themselves struggling to cope with $55 a week in strike benefits. A total of 185,000 Teamster employees in the companys U.S. workforce of 302,000 walked out. "We have seen no sign that the company has changed its attitude, so we are not particularly optimistic about these new talks," Teamsters president Ron Carey said. "But well be there, trying to reach a reasonable agreement that provides good jobs for American workers." At the onset of the strike, the company repeated that it doesnt plan any major revisions to the offer made before the strike (Shiver A22). In an interview with the Cable News Network (CNN) "MoneyLine" program, United Parcel Services president and CEO James Kelly noted that there was many more issues involved in the strike than just the part-time employment topic that had received substantial news coverage.
