its history. Discussion The organization now known as the United Nations was born after World War II, from a desire to avoid the horrors of facing such a conflict ever
again. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt coined the name "United Nations," which was "first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when
representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers" ("History of the United Nations"). The idea of international organizations that were created to "cooperate
on specific matters" was not new at the time; in 1865, an organization called the "International Telecommunication Union" was founded; and in 1874, the "Universal Postal Union" came into being
("History of the United Nations"). The United Nations is not the first international group devoted to peace, either. The International Peace Conference took place in 1899 in The Hague, with
the purpose of establishing ways to settle crises peacefully, prevent wars and codify "rules of warfare" ("History of the United Nations"). The IPC adopted an agreement known as the "Convention
