perspectives that are eccentric and intriguing. One critic notes how "Cheevers main theme was the spiritual and emotional emptiness of life" (Books and Writers). But, he did so in many
interesting and very different ways. The following paper examines the unique subject matter, or focus, within the works of John Cheever. The Unique Subject Material in the Writings
of John Cheever Cheever essentially wrote about a new class or category of society in the 50s, the middle class society that strove to possess things and do well, having
good jobs and stable families. But, in reality no ones life was perfect and today people understand that such a life is often empty or a person living such a
life will often seek some meaning. One author notes, "He lived during a time of materialism, an uprising social class, and changing views on society. Cheevers writing complemented his troubled
life and the time period he lived in" (Quazen). So, while his people were perhaps average, his story and the focus of the stories concerning such average people was very
unique. One author indicates how "Again and again Cheever nests one story into another" which complicates the story and makes it incredibly unique (White). One such story was The
Enormous Radio wherein "a young wife in New York who listens to a new radio all day that, strangely enough, is tuned in not to broadcasts but to the conversations
going on in the adjoining apartments" (White). The story thus becomes about all the turmoil all the other people she has listened to are experiencing, such as dying from cancer,
