point for Americans in terms of the liberties we enjoy as a democratic society. It was on that day that the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in
New York disintegrated before our eyes as a result of a terrorist plane attack, the Pentagon itself was attacked, and another plane under the control of terrorist crashed when the
passengers of that plane put up a fight. Terrorism has had a horrendous impact on society as we once knew it. This impact has been both direct and
indirect. We not only have to deal with the physical and emotion scars caused by acts of terrorism, we have to deal with the societal scars caused by our
reaction to terrorism. All Americans have been adversely affected by the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Muslim Americans have been centered out by police and government officials and in
many cases even been the target of hate crimes simply because of their Muslim identity. Mainstream America too, however, has been affected by the laws and regulations that have
arisen after 9-11. In short, America today is not the same America as it was just a few years ago. One of
the most concerning of the reactions to 9-11 is the attacks that we have been subjected to in terms of our legal rights. It can be contended, in fact, that
the suspension of legal rights associated with counter-terrorist strategies are more in keeping with the martial law of militarized and totalitarian states than the rule of law that operates in
