The Underground Railroad was not, as the name might imply,
a specific transportation system but rather an extensive network of groups and individuals which was instrumental in assisting slaves to escape from the Southern states of America in the plantation
era to the North and Canada. It was a movement which grew in parallel to the abolitionist campaign, and one which provided slaves with the guidance and resources which they
needed in order to travel from one end of the country to another in order to gain their freedom. Without the Railroad, it is doubtful if many slaves would have
managed to escape the plantation system, since to do so was almost impossible for individuals and groups acting on their own.
The Railroad was not co-ordinated or organised by any one particular group, but operated basically on the cell principle.
Each small group was responsible for its own region, and would take slaves who came in from the south, conduct or direct them across the area which comprised the groups
territory and then hand them on to the next group on the northward route. Consequently, each group would know only their local part of the network, rather than being aware
