that racism is still very much alive in the United States, and that people still tend to think stereotypically about other races. Discussion American History X starts Edward Norton as
Derek Vineyard and Edward Furlong as his young brother Danny. Danny idolizes Derek, which makes the latters crimes and prison sentence problematic: he believes in what hes doing but he
doesnt want Danny to end up the same way (American History X). In prison, Derek is raped brutally but he also starts to change; some of his thinking is prompted
by the attack of course, but some also results from the fact that he sees prison gangs cooperating, something he did not see on the streets. The greatest change is
brought about by his friendship with Lamont (Guy Torrey) a black man (American History X). Derek resolves to get out of the gang and give up his skinhead ways; he
wants to remain a role model for his brother. Then, in an unexpected and shocking scene, Danny is shot dead in a high school bathroom by a black gang member
(American History X). The murder of his kid brother breaks Dereks heart, but it finally cements once and for all the idea that his way is not going to solve
anything and will only lead to more death. The film deserves a few words as a film because its very ambitious. Unfortunately,
the screenwriter tried to do the impossible: show how an ordinary middle-class kid chooses to embrace the Nazi ideology and turn into a vicious killer, and then back away from
that life. The motives for such actions are deep and complex, but the film only has time to touch on a few rather pedestrian ideas, such as the fact that
