in the economy in terms of credit creation. It is also a market that is changing, especially in the light of the 2008/9 recession and credit crunch. To examine the
industry any examination will need to start with a brief history if credit cards and an overview if the industry. 2. Overview of the Industry 2.1 History It
can be argued that the idea of credit is long established. However, it can be traced and evidenced as long ago as 3000 years ago in Babylon, Syria and Ancient
Egypt. The use here was of a bill of exchange, and may be seen as the pre-runner of banknotes. However, it is a large jump from the idea of credit
to the development of the modern credit card business models. The development of the idea can be seen as taking place in
parallel in different places. There are different stories in different places that indicate the development of the scenario where credit cards would become reality, however, this was not like the
development of many other products, this was a social and environmental with the development of ideas occurring in different areas. In New
York there were the development of shoppers plates in the 1920s, however, this was limited to only a few shops that operated the system. There were also credit cards of
