Our founding fathers conception of human nature varied somewhat. Some believed that humans were inherently good but
others believed human nature was not something that was consistent between individuals. They believed that government existed in order to insure our basic rights, to insure that one man
did not unjustly infringe on the rights of the other. The views of John Adams and James Madison, in particular, are interesting in this regard.
Knowledge, to the founding fathers, was an important element in human nature. John Adams and James Madison, in particular, were concerned with the voice of
the common man. John Adams contended in his work that the rich and those born into privilege should be separated in the Senate so that they didnt dominate it.
Unlike many in his time Adams, for example, did not believe that knowledge in itself was either enlightening or redemptive. While knowledge could obviously result in tremendous advancements
in science and technology, that did not necessarily result in an advancement of the human condition in terms of moral progress in particular. Adams contended, in fact, that our
