The political situation in the UK is one that stable and encourages competition. However, there is also a notable correlation with many of the major companies and their links with the government. The increased emphasis that is placed by the government of technical awareness and e-commerce may be increasing the medium though which clothes, along with other goods are sold. The way in which the market is structured and planning permission is given may also be seen as encouraging the development of larger out of town shops in retail parks. The low interest rates set by the bank of England to gain the government economic targets may also be seen as encouraging borrowing and impacting on the economy. The economic climate is a strong influence on the clothing market. In 2002 the market only grew by 4% to ?33.51 billion (Euromonitor, 2003). This reflected a modest increase in the economy, much of which was lead by consumer spending and increasing debt levels. Cloths are product that credit cards and store cards are frequently used on. However, in recent years, when the economy has been slower there has been a shift in spending, with a higher level of discount stores gaining ground on the brand names. Social influences are also felt, this s a sector that is strongly influenced by fashions and trends. The teenage and womens wear market are particularly sensitive to these influences.
