balances designed to prevent any single segment of the government from carrying too much control. Since the end of the Cold War in 1991, the United States has led
other nations in relation to economic indicators, but continues to fall behind other countries in relation to healthcare (CIA World Factbook, 2011).
The current population of approximately 313 million people include a range of ethnic populations and religions (CIA, 2011). The gender ratios for the country suggest that women outlive men,
though there are more men born in the country than women each year. At the time of birth, the male to female ratio is 1.047, but the ratio decreases
over time (CIA, 2011). By the time the population reaches 65 years or older, the male to female ratio decreases to 0.75 and the ratio for the total population
is 0.97 males to females (CIA, 2011). The life expectancy rate at birth is 78.37 years as compared to the global life expectancy at birth of 50 (CIA, 2011).
Anderson and Squires (2010) maintained that the life expectancy at birth in this country is 77.8 years, placing it at the bottom quartile among the 30 OECD participating countries
in 2006. Males have a lower life expectancy at birth than females, with a difference of approximately 5.01 years (CIA, 2011).
