THE U.S. AUTOMOBILE MARKET AND FOREIGN MARKETS For The PaperStore, November 2001 properly! This is an
update of a previous paper. The last page provides data regarding trade deficits as well as the barriers that face U.S. automakers entering foreign markets. The automobile industry is
vast with the Big 3, GM, Ford, and Chrysler still controlling the market. These mega-corporations are each structured as a corporation, although they each were initially established as sole-proprietorships or
as partnerships. Each of the three major auto manufacturers is involved in a variety of partnerships with other auto makers, auto part suppliers, and auto service outlets but the most
interesting partnership is the one involving all three of these giants. The Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles, PNGV, is a joint Big-3-federal government program initiated to develop a
mid-sized sedan that gets 80 miles per gallon of gasoline. The timeline calls for roadworthy prototypes from these car manufacturers by the year 2003. Since it often takes auto manufacturers
five or more years to design, develop, test a prototype and then get it on the market, the time line is short but they are on track and will probably
meet the deadline (Jewett, 1998). The PNGV requires the Big 3 to work together in the research and development stages but then applying the technology and designing and building the
car is left up to each of the manufacturers individually. Each revealed a prototype in January 1998: * GM: The EV1 is a two-seat electric coupe and is already
available in Arizona and California. New prototypes include an EV that runs on compressed natural gas and a hybrid that can use a variety of fuel sources and that gets
