has also engaged in wars for the promotion of democracy but it must be remembered that the original British colonies in this part of the hemisphere had to engage in a war to gain their rights to vote for representation before laws were enacted. It is upon the zealous belief in democracy that the United States became a world power and through this has had great influence in international politics since the end of our own Civil War. The Civil War was fought because human rights were being violated. Slavery was a tragic era in our country and the President said slavery could not continue. Popular belief is the war was fought to end slavery and certainly, that is true, however, the real cause of the war was to hold the Southern States as part of the country. They intended to secede. This is an important point to remember. The Civil War took an enormous toll on America, both in terms of human life and property destruction and emotionally; 640,000 died, nearly ====% of all the men from the South. The North won the battles but the country had to win the "greater war." By "greater war" I mean the reunification of the country. The animosity between the Northerners and the Southerners was so dramatic, it might well have been unrepairable had not President Lincoln placed primary importance on this difficult goal. Considering the relative speed with which the country began its healing process, (and understanding there are still areas in the South that harbor resentment towards the North), the world could see that America would stand by its goal for democracy. ...
