The "U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual" is the result of decades of military experience but, most importantly, it
is a reflection of our relatively new experience with counterinsurgency. Not surprisingly, over time, our knowledge of military tactics have evolved and grown. Only recently, however, have we
been put into a position of having to deal with counterinsurgency. Particularly important lessons have been learned, for example, during the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Unfortunately, these
lessons were lessons that had to be learned the hard way, in the heat of the battle itself. While military training included extensive analyses of previous wars our nation
had been involved in, none of those wars compare to what we are encountering today. In his introduction to the "Counterinsurgency
Manual" John Nagle contends that when counterinsurgency began in Iraq our Army was simply unprepared. Military efficiency and the ability to perform our designated function is predicated on a
defined chain of command. That chain of command encompasses officers, non-commissioned officers, and enlisted personnel alike and it requires in-depth understanding both up the chain of command and down
