whether the two conflicts are more similar or dissimilar. If in fact they are more alike than not, they are most likely part of the same conflict. It would be
like one war with a mere gap to separate the times of activity. However, if after looking at these two wars it is discovered that they each are very different,
then it would follow that they are indeed distinct events. Roberts tends to lump the two together, saying that the first of the two great wars where Europe all
but destroyed itself began in 1914 (Roberts 427). And in some sense one can begin to see the similarity. Yes, both wars were about Europe. The first war which began
after a long stint of peaceful relations culminated after a conflict between Austria-Hungary and Russia which finally came to a head; then Germany, France and Great Britain quickly became
involved (427). What led up to the war exactly? Between 1870 and 1914 there had been intensifying nationalistic and imperial rivalries in Europe,which ended with the assassination of
the Archduke Francis Ferdinand by a serb and the beginning of World War I in 1914 ("World History" PG; Mather 4). Some suggest that Berlin sought to exploit the
opportunity to rise to world-power status after the assassination (Mather 4). Also, Austria was forced into a war against Serbia, and therefore threw down the gauntlet to France and
Russia (4). During World War I, Great Britain, France, Italy, and Russia all opposed Germany which was aligned with Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire ("World History" PG). Eventually, in
