Franklin recounted feeling compelled to give to Whitefields latest project, which was building an orphanage in Georgia. A man near him was
similarly moved, but having no money in his pockets, he turned to a neighbor and asked for a loan. Franklin speculated that the man who was asked for a loan
must have been the only one not moved by Whitefield speech because the neighbor replied, "At any other time Friend...I would lend to thee freely, but not now, for thee
seem to be out of thy right Senses" (Franklin 105). Sources indicate that being "out of ones senses" appears to have been a typical occurrence for this sort of religious
revivalism. At the revivals of the Great Awakening, people wept and cried for joy as the religious fervor overcame them. Beginning in the late 1730s and extending to around sometime
in the 1760s, the British colonies in North America that would soon become the United States of America saw a huge outburst of religious fervor, which became known as the
"Great Awakening" (Foner; Garraty PG). This trend set the precedent for what would become a recurrent and distinctive characteristic of American culture and religious life in particular?revivalism (Foner; Garraty PG).
Although the initial impetus of the first Great Awakening would subside as the American colonies became involved in their fight for independence
from England, a similar movement would resurface in the early part of the nineteenth century. Known as the Second Great Awakening, this movement was, naturally, similar to the first. However,
