following paper examines the Tuskegee Experiments and discusses the idea of double blind experiments today. Tuskegee and Double Blind Experiments As mentioned, the men in the study, a
study that went on from 1932 to 1972, were never informed of the experiments they were involved with. They were told they were being checked for "bad blood" while the
government knew that they had syphilis. One author notes, "These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama...their doctors had no intention of
curing them of syphilis at all" (The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, 2004). The data was actually collected primarily from those who died from the disease as the researchers "deliberately left" these
men "to degenerate under the ravages of tertiary syphilis-which can include tumors, heart disease, paralysis, blindness, insanity, and death" (The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, 2004). In the beginning even the
researcher(s) had no idea what they were doing, thus presenting us with a double blind experiment where only those who set up the research in the beginning know what it
is all about. By conducting such an experiment it is believed that the results will be completely unbiased. In this case we can clearly see that such an experiment was
powerfully unethical. For the most part any such research today, and such research does continue, argues that the patients are not to be given false hopes for their condition.
In this case clearly the individuals were told they were being helped when in reality they were only being observed for scientific research. As mentioned, such activities are clearly unethical
