James himself was intentionally creating a narrative which would not lend itself to any relatively simplistic interpretation. The way in which the various texts are nested sets up a framework
which immediately puts the reader in the position of adopting several different perspectives simultaneously, even before the unreliability of the governesss narration is taken into account. There is no clear
distinction, for example, between the agent and the patient from the point of view of the participant: the governess can be both, or neither, depending on the extent of the
control which she is able to wield over events at any given time.
The ghost itself can be perceived either as a participant result, or not, which again depends on the interpretation which is put on the actions of the
governess. James creates a constant ambiguity, in the sense that the reader can view the ghost as something which has been created through the process of the governesss own actions,
or as something which has an independent existence (and is therefore a participant in its own right) and which has merely been changed by her actions. This in itself is
problematical: did the ghost have an existence as a participant before the events of the narrative took place, but was not perceptible? In this case, it could not have been
brought into being, as such, by the actions of any of the human characters, but rather made visible.
