accepted as a real phenomenon. It is kept under wraps until 60 Minutes or 20/20 or some other magazine show decides it is time to do another sex industry piece.
If in fact young girls are raped and tortured routinely in sex rings around the world, that is a horrific story. That it has happened is unquestioned. But what is
at issue is whether or not sex trafficking is really a phenomenon or is it largely a myth like snuff films. Is it something that happened once or twice and
has escalated to the point where people think that thousands of girls are stolen each year, or is it a real problem? Mithers (2004) estimates that there are about ten
thousand girls working in massage parlors, strip clubs and brothels. Then, she goes on to discuss how trafficking works and claims that some are tricked, abducted or required to work
off a debt (Mithers, 2004). It is not clear how many of the ten thousand are working willingly and how many are coerced into the business. After all, at least
many of these venues are deemed legal. These sex workers just have to play by the rules and what they are doing is legal. One only has to look at
the Duke University scandal to understand that women can dance without clothing and get very close to their paid customers legally, as long as no sexual intercourse takes place. As
