To most in this corporeal world, an apple is an apple and a duck is a duck. There is no debate. But in the world of metaphysics, there is debate as to whether the apple or the duck exist. It could be an illusion. It could be what the minds eye sees and nothing more than an image. Many are familiar with virtual reality. Indeed, philosophers knew hundreds of years ago that what is viewed is not necessarily real. First, what is reality? What is truth? Such things are hard to define. Is there an objective reality or are all things subject to evaluation or perspective? The question that goes to whether or not a tree makes a sound if it falls in the woods but no one is there to hear it, is age old. Do things make sounds if there is no receiver? Is sound tied to the specific object that is creating the ruckus or only to the thing that hears? Problems of metaphysics and philosophy have looked at such issues. Some contemporary philosophers claim that all things are really comprised of energy and that reality is just an interpretation of this energy that forms pictures in the minds of individuals. It is true that two people can look at the same thing and view it differently. It is why witnesses are notoriously inaccurate. Two people for instance can view a painting and each see different things. Hence, there is much skepticism attached to reality. Is something real or is the ultimate image a personal interpretation?
