When examining Ben & Jerrys web site for example, when clicking on the "jobs" area of this user friendly site, the description includes a list of benefits such as "
paid family leave, health club memberships and three free pints of Vermonts Finest super premium ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbets every day!" ("Ben & Jerrys," 2006). Everything about
the site seems to suggest that the atmosphere is playful and that employees are valued. Also, other research supports that assumption. The company seems to want to level
the playing field, assuring that those employed in the business world are able to make a good living. It wants to do away with the model where the CEO makes
a great deal of money where the little people only earn a pittance. Unlike firms that employ people at minimum wage, but have CEOs making billions, Ben and Jerrys five
to one ratio structure means that someone at the lowest level of the firm may make $20,000 per year, but no one-even the CEO-makes more than $100,000. It is good
in theory. At least, people will feel they are working for a company that is fair. However, the policy creates more barriers than benefits. And while the pay scale
is close, that does not mean that a hierarchal structure is not in place. Certainly, part of the discrepancy when evaluating this firm is that it does not also incorporate
a flat structure. In respect to communications, the companys site seems to suggest that it fosters a relaxed atmosphere where employee feelings and needs are valued. Here, communication is fostered.
There is a great deal of information included at the site, such as the companys desire to promote social change. What is absent is the true nature of the career
