In "The Trouble with Wilderness" by William Cronon he addresses our perceptions of wilderness and illustrates that it is not necessarily what we envision it to be and is rather
something created by mankind. The following paper summarizes his essay. The Trouble with Wilderness Cronon (1996) indicates that prior to the 19th and 20th century, and perhaps prior
to Thoreau, wilderness was seen as the "antithesis of all that was orderly and good" as wilderness was barren and a place where people were sent off to die alone
perhaps (Cronon, 1996; 71). Today we see the result of this with a wilderness that is filled with "moral values and cultural symbols" (Cronon, 1996; 72). There is also
the history attached to the wilderness, in the ideals of mankind, that speak of the supernatural. Only in the wilderness did God seem to appear to people and only in
the wilderness do people believe they can have experiences that cannot be rivaled in the world of man. In the romantic ideals of humans the wilderness conjures up images of
fantasy and the unknown and the spiritual and the revealing. Cronon (1996) makes the interesting point that it is often the well off who are most adamant about protecting
this wilderness for wilderness and enjoying the wilderness is for those who have the leisure time and money to travel to such places. The people who must make their living
off of the land, and who essentially live in the wilderness, do not hold such romantic ideals about their forests for these forests and spots of wilderness are their survival.
